Chianti Classico

The Chianti Classico production area is the first in the world to be defined by law, with a proclamation of 1716 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III. The proclamation specified, among other things, the boundaries of the areas within which Chianti wines could be produced.

It was then Baron Bettino Ricasoli, between 1834 and 1837, who divulged the composition he considered most suitable for obtaining a pleasant, sparkling, ready-to-drink red wine and which would later become the basis of the official composition of Chianti wine. However, the specification of the denomination has undergone several changes, while still recognising a predominant role for Sangiovese grape.

Chianti Classico, distinguished by the unmistakable Black Rooster mark, comes from the historic production area between Siena and Florence, characterised by a mosaic of territories each with its own soil and mesoclimate. It is made from Sangiovese grapes, at least 80%, and a possible blend with other red grapes authorised in the Tuscan region, such as the indigenous Canaiolo and Colorino.

Sangiovese is a grape that is very sensitive to external factors, capable of modifying its aromas depending on the soil in which it is grown. Chianti Classico has a floral bouquet of violets, with aromas of wild berries. It is a well-structured red wine, with beautiful tannic texture and balanced freshness.

The types covered by the designation are Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Ageing is limited to one year for the vintage, 24 months for the Riserva and 30 months for the Gran Selezione.

Despite the differences, the entire area has in recent years achieved one of the highest levels of quality in national oenology, as witnessed by the impressive number of awards that wines from this area have received.
