Islay

L’isola di Islay, la più meridionale delle Ebridi, è una delle più rinomate zone di produzione dello Scotch whisky. La sua fama proviene dall’abbondante presenza di torba attraverso la quale sgorgano le sorgenti d'acqua dell'isola e con cui viene affumicato il malto destinato alla produzione del whisky, al quale conferisce il caratteristico sapore di fumo, iodio e alghe tanto apprezzato dagli intenditori.

Delle nove distillerie attive, quelle della costa sudorientale, Laphroaig, Lagavulin e Ardberg, producono whisky più torbati e di struttura, mentre Caol Ila, a nord dell’isola, si caratterizza per uno stile più leggero ed elegante. Bowmore invece, grazie all’impiego di botti ex-Bourbon per la maturazione dei suoi whisky, si contraddistingue per l’equilibrio tra note dolci e torbate.
