Description
What kind of wine it is
Brunello di Montalcino Vigna I Poggi by Poggio Antico is a single-vineyard red wine produced in Tuscany from Sangiovese grapes. It is the result of a viticulture that expresses a full-bodied and structured style, characterized by a precise technical profile. The production process involves careful work in the cellar, combining cement vinification with a long aging in barrels, thus achieving a complex and balanced drinkability in which origin and character merge.
Where it comes from
This wine comes to life from the I Poggi vineyard, a specific plot located in Montalcino, Tuscany, managed by Poggio Antico. The soil stands out for being strongly calcareous and rich in nutrients, factors able to directly influence the solidity of flavor and the mineral perception on the nose. The choice to enhance a single vineyard allows for a faithful expression of the terroir of origin, showcasing the natural potential of the environment.
How it’s produced
The Sangiovese grapes are vinified separately in tulip-shaped cement vats, where alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place simultaneously during maceration. The extraction of phenolic compounds occurs at a controlled temperature through delicate punch-downs and pump-overs. Maturation includes a long rest of thirty months in Austrian barrels, followed by a careful blend and a final aging in cement for another six months.
Tasting notes
The aromatic profile reveals a complex nose in which berry fruit aromas stand out, accompanied by sweet spicy notes and subtle mineral touches. On the palate, the wine envelops with a full body and a well-defined tannic structure, perfectly balanced by vibrant acidity that enhances its tasting progression. The experience ends with a long and persistent finish, recalling at the end the same fruity and spicy sensations perceived initially.
Food pairings
Its tannic texture and persistent flavor make it the ideal companion for red meat dishes and succulent roasts. It pairs wonderfully with classic Florentine steak, where the grilled notes seamlessly complement the wine’s character. It is also particularly enjoyable alongside rich baked dishes and boards of aged cheeses, where it supports their aromatic intensity without overpowering it.
When to serve it
This red, with its notable structure and intensity, ideally enriches tables set with flavorful main courses or formal dinners. Its rigorous vinification process and aging in wood give it aging potential, allowing it to evolve positively if cellared over the years. Whether enjoyed now or left to develop further for tannic integration, this wine always provides a deep and lasting tasting experience.
