Description

What kind of wine is it

The Collio Sauvignon Ronco delle Mele by Venica & Venica is a still white wine, made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, one of the most widespread international varieties, now regarded in Friuli as almost native. The color is a bright green-gold. The style is that of cool-climate Sauvignons, with a precise aromatic profile, good freshness and a full structure.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the namesake vineyard in Dolegna del Collio, in the province of Gorizia, at the estate founded by Venica in 1930. The roughly two-hectare vineyard reaches a maximum altitude of about 150 meters, faces northwest toward the Julian Alps, and looks out to the Canin glacier. The name recalls the apple trees planted by the founder to stabilize the slope. The soil consists of marl and sandstone, and the differing microclimates between the rows require harvesting at different times.

How it is made

The grapes are hand-picked and destemmed. This is followed by a maceration of about twenty hours at low temperature, in vessels that protect the must from oxygen by recycling the carbon dioxide produced during fermentation. The must ferments and ages for five months on the lees, partly in large wooden casks and partly in stainless steel. The wine is then blended and bottled at full moon, between March and June.

Tasting notes

The nose is intense and elegant, with elderflower, gooseberry, tomato leaf, green bell pepper, boxwood and cedar. Citrusy nuances of lime and grapefruit follow, along with mineral tones of flint and light smoky notes. The palate echoes these sensations, with a fresh citrus drive and a salinity stemming from the terroir. The wine is full and beautifully balanced, with a long, velvety, smooth finish.

Food pairing

Pairs with truffled eggs, porcini crêpes, lobster ravioli and grilled prawns. It also works well with an asparagus risotto and with seafood. In general it goes with appetizers, delicate creams and soups, shellfish and fish in sauce.

When to serve it

This is a white suited to elegant lunches and dinners, where seafood cuisine or delicate dishes deserve a wine of character. It has good ageing potential, over ten years.
