Description
What type of wine is it
The Vigna di Paola by Tasca d'Almerita is a dry white wine made from Malvasia grapes. It comes from Tenuta Capofaro, in the Aeolian Islands, and brings to the glass a distinctly volcanic character, driven by salinity. Its profile combines saline and sulphurous notes with floral and fruity nuances, for an immediate, accessible white with good length.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Gelso area, in the southern part of the island of Vulcano, within Tenuta Capofaro of Tasca d'Almerita. The vineyards, planted in 2006, lie between 20 and 100 metres above sea level with a south-east exposure. The soil is made up of ash and fine sands, as well as pumice, silicates and metals: a composition reflected in the wine’s mineral and saline character.
How it's made
The Malvasia is trained on trellis with Guyot pruning and low yields. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks and includes around fifteen days of skin contact, which contributes to structure and aromatic profile. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out, to preserve freshness. The wine ages for four months in steel, on the lees.
Tasting notes
On the nose, saline and sulphurous notes typical of the island prevail, accompanied by floral and fruity hints typical of Malvasia. On the palate, the sip is a real burst of salinity, with a well-present acidity that carries the wine through to the finish. The finish is long and delivers good length.
Food pairing
Its salinity and freshness make it a natural match for seafood dishes: raw fish, tuna tartare, shellfish and light fried fare. It also goes well with octopus and vegetable salads, and with the flavours of Sicilian cuisine featuring capers, olives and tomato. Its mineral character stands up effortlessly to even the most flavourful dishes.
When to serve it
It’s a white for summer dinners and seafood-based aperitifs, but also for those looking for a wine to enjoy with boldly flavoured dishes. Serve it in a medium-sized white wine glass that lets the saline and floral notes emerge. Best enjoyed young, at the height of its freshness.
