Description

What kind of wine is it

Santenay Joseph Drouhin is a red Burgundy wine made from Pinot Noir. Produced in the village of Santenay, south of the Côte de Beaune, it offers a structured profile with a more pronounced tannic texture in its youth and good persistence. The winemaking process involves fermentation and maceration in small open vats, followed by aging in oak barrels to define intensity and character.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Santenay, a Burgundian locality located south of the Côte de Beaune at the foot of Mont de Sène. The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soils, a combination that contributes to the profile of Pinot Noir and its expression of the terroir.

How it is produced

Production is based on grapes and must sourced from partner growers who follow a strict set of guidelines. Harvesting is done manually in perforated crates, with careful selection of the bunches. After total destemming, fermentation and maceration take place in small open vats for 2–3 weeks with indigenous yeasts; the wine is then aged in oak barrels for 12–16 months.

Tasting notes

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby color. The bouquet is intense, with notes of wild berries recalling blackberries and both black and red blueberries. On the palate, the structure is often tannic when young, with a long persistence; the finish echoes the aromatic sensations perceived on the nose, retaining continuity and clarity.

Food pairings

On the table, it pairs well with red meats, roasted dishes, and recipes based on mushrooms, thanks to its structure and persistence. The tannic component supports flavorful dishes and roast preparations, while the notes of wild berries pair nicely with recipes where mushrooms play a key role.

When to serve it

This is a red wine that can be enjoyed both in its youth, when the tannic texture is more pronounced, and after a period of bottle aging for a smoother sensation. At the table, it expresses itself best with menus based on red meats, roasts, or mushrooms, highlighting notes of blackberries and blueberries and its persistent palate.
