Description

What kind of wine it is

The Pinot Nero Schweizer by Franz Haas is a red wine with a ruby hue, made from Pinot Nero grapes. It has an elegant, supple style, with enveloping tannins and a harmonious structure. Its body and fine-grained texture give it a wine with a long aging potential.

Where it comes from

It originates in the vineyards of the Franz Haas winery in Montagna, in the province of Bolzano. The individual vineyards are located at elevations between 350 and 700 meters, in areas chosen for their microclimate. The soils are highly varied: silty terrains alternate with sandy, calcareous and gravelly soils, sometimes just a few meters apart. Plantings are of high density, with in-house selected clones of very low yield.

How it is made

The grapes ferment in open-top vats, where the must remains in contact with the skins thanks to frequent pump-overs and punch-downs. These techniques extract coloring substances and aromas from the skins. At the end of fermentation the wine moves from stainless steel to barrique, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for 12 months. After bottling, it refines in bottle for about another year.

Tasting notes

On appearance it is ruby red, with an intensity that ranges from pale to deep. The nose offers complex, layered aromas of ripe wild berries and cherry, with spicy notes of pepper and leather. On the palate it mirrors the nose, with enveloping tannins, elegance and finesse. Structure and body are harmonious.

Food pairings

Pairs with game, such as pheasant and duck, and with braised game. It also accompanies red meats and aged cheeses well.

When to serve it

It is a table red, suited to autumn and winter dinners based on meat and game. Serve in a large-bowled glass, which lets the fruit and spice aromas emerge. Thanks to its structure and long aging potential, it can also be cellared and opened on a special occasion.
