Description
What kind of wine is it?
Firriato’s L’Ecrù is a sweet white wine made from Zibibbo grapes, produced in Sicily at Tenuta Borgo Guarini. It is the result of a skilful combination of late harvesting and a portion of grapes subjected to drying, a process that gives the wine an intense and well-defined flavour profile. Winemaking is distinguished by a particular technical step, where the dried berries are left to infuse in the wine from the late harvest, before being left to rest in the bottle. This process gives the wine a rich and persistent style, with an emphasis on aromatic complexity and a balanced flavour profile.
Where does it come from?
This wine originates from the vineyards of Tenuta Borgo Guarini, located in the Agro area of Trapani within the Terre Siciliane denomination. This geographical area is considered one of the island’s historically most suitable zones for cultivating the Zibibbo variety. The specific location and careful selection of dedicated parcels favour precise management of grape ripening – a prerequisite for a production centred around late harvest and drying. Its strong local identity results in a wine in which sweetness and savouriness blend harmoniously, offering a true expression of western Sicily.
How is it made?
The Zibibbo grapes are hand-harvested in the first days of September, selecting only the clusters with the highest sugar concentration. This first selection is naturally dried on special racks, while the remaining grapes complete their ripening on the vine for the late harvest. After the drying process, the berries are destemmed and immersed in the must obtained from the second harvest, initiating an infusion of variable duration. The final ageing involves a six-month rest in the bottle, a crucial step for stabilising the balance between aromatic profile and flavourful freshness.
Tasting notes
L’Ecrù shows a bright golden yellow colour, enriched by deep amber highlights that reflect the unique production method. The bouquet is intense and layered, with clear hints of honey, dried figs, dates and candied orange peel, intertwined with notes of aromatic herbs such as sage and lemongrass. On the palate, the sweet entry is beautifully balanced by savoury notes that add vibrancy and dry out the finish, striking a balance that invites another sip. The long aromatic persistence echoes mature fruit and the delicate herbaceous impressions perceived on the nose.
Food pairings
At the table, it naturally accompanies oven-baked desserts and dry pastries, creating a pleasant aromatic harmony with custard tarts and fresh fruit. It is also ideal with creamy ricotta desserts, where the soft texture of the dish is complemented by the wine’s structural and savoury character. Drawing from local traditions, it enhances Sicilian classics such as cannoli and cassata, balancing the richness of their fillings with its clear honey and citrus notes. Its intensity and long persistence make it a reliable companion for ending a meal with elegance and finesse.
When to serve
L’Ecrù is the perfect choice to end a lunch or dinner with a precisely matched sweet wine, or simply for enjoying a moment of pure tasting pleasure. It shows its best during after-meal moments shared with others, paired with rich desserts or shining as the star of the glass. The final bottle ageing ensures it is served at its ideal stage of maturity, ready to display its full aromatic wealth. Bringing it to the table during an informal evening or a friendly gathering promises a memorable finale, marked by intense aromas and great enjoyment.
