Description
What type of wine it is
Solaia 1994 by Marchesi Antinori is a great Tuscan red wine created from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Produced at the historic Tenuta Tignanello, it represents one of the most prestigious labels in the Italian wine scene. It is made only in vintages considered exceptional, and this release stands out for its elegance, depth, and structural harmony. The blend of international varieties and Sangiovese gives the wine aromatic complexity, a silky tannic texture, and remarkable aging potential.
Where it comes from
It comes from the namesake Solaia vineyard located at Tenuta Tignanello, in the heart of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. The area is characterized by hills ideally suited to viticulture, with stony soils and climatic conditions that favor grape ripening. The year 1994 was a particularly positive vintage for Tuscan wine: the season was regular and stable, allowing balanced vine growth and gradual, complete ripening of the grapes, bringing out the character of the vineyard and cultivated varieties.
How it is made
The grapes are harvested between the end of September and mid-October, meticulously selecting the finest clusters. In the cellar, the bunches are gently destemmed and the berries carefully chosen before pressing. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place in truncated cone-shaped tanks, where the extraction of aromatic and tannic components is controlled to preserve balance and finesse. Afterwards, the wine is transferred to barriques for malolactic fermentation, a stage that helps develop roundness, complexity, and further integration of the tannins.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it shows a deep and intense ruby red. The bouquet is broad and elegant, with scents of ripe red fruits, blackberry and plum accompanied by delicate spicy notes. With oxygenation, further nuances emerge, enriching the bouquet. On the palate, it is vibrant and enveloping, supported by significant structure and soft, well-integrated tannins. The sip unfolds with balance and continuity, culminating in a long and persistent finish that recalls the spicy sensations perceived on the nose.
Food pairings
Thanks to its structure and aromatic intensity, this wine pairs perfectly with substantial meat-based dishes. It is especially suited for grilled red meats, roasts, and game preparations, where the wine's complexity enhances the richness of the flavors. It is also excellent with traditional Tuscan recipes such as bistecca alla fiorentina or braised wild boar, and finds a great balance with well-aged cheeses.
When to serve it
This is a wine to choose for special occasions or dedicated tastings, when you want to enjoy a bottle capable of expressing elegance, maturity, and aromatic depth. Served at around 16–18 °C in large glasses, it allows the bouquet to open gradually in the glass. The quality of the vintage and the wine's structure have supported a long evolution over time, today making it a fascinating and mature expression of this label’s heritage.
