Château Giscours
Château Giscours is a historic estate in Margaux, in the Médoc, classified Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Its origins date back to the sixteenth century, when the wealthy cloth merchant Pierre de Lhomme expanded the vineyard by planting vines on uncultivated land. In the nineteenth century Jean-Pierre Pescatore invested in the quality of the wines and Edouard Cruse modernised the property, creating the large park and the Ferme Suzanne.
In the postwar period the Tari family revived the estate, and from 1995 Eric Albada Jelgersma renovated the vineyard and buildings. Since 2018 Giscours has been led by the children Dennis, Derk and Valérie, with managing director Alexander van Beek, and is part of AJ Domaines. The mermaid that has appeared on the labels since 1900 inspired the second wine, La Sirène de Giscours.
The terroir unfolds over Quaternary Garonne gravel ridges: the rises of Grand Poujeau and Petit Poujeau, with warm soils ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon; the cooler Bel Air hill; and the Cantelaude plateau, suited to Merlot. The gravels drain excess water and the roots reach depths of up to ten metres. Alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, the main variety, grow Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Amid history, nature and vibrant life — from the park to the kitchen garden and the estate’s animals — Château Giscours expresses all the elegance of Margaux.
