Avondale
Avondale is a South African wine estate in the Paarl Valley in the Western Cape, with historical roots dating back to 1694, when the land, then called Gele Blomme Vallei, was granted to Hendrick Roodeberg: it was among the first in the valley to be dedicated to viticulture.
In 1996 the Grieve family purchased the 160-hectare property and John and Ginny Grieve entrusted its management to their younger son, Johnathan, the current owner, who came from art studies. In 1999 the first vintage under the Avondale label was released. The estate also preserves a valuable architectural heritage, such as the 18th-century Manor House and the 1813 gravity-flow cellar.
The estate’s motto is "Terra Est Vita", the earth is life. Avondale follows an organic and biodynamic approach it calls BioLOGIC, a holistic model that marries traditional practices with modern scientific knowledge, using biodynamic preparations in the vineyard to enhance soil vitality and the expression of terroir.
This philosophy carries through in the cellar, as demonstrated by Chenin Blanc Anima, made from certified organic grapes sourced from 13 different soil types: whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and maturation in oak barrels and terracotta amphorae, partly crafted with clay from the estate.
History, respect for nature, and a constant quest make Avondale one of Paarl’s most distinctive estates, able to capture in the glass the authentic spirit of South African wines.
