Primitivo
up to
A black grape from the Dalmatian coast, Primitivo , whose presence is also found in California, where it is known by the name Zinfandel , has found its homeland of choice in Italy in Puglia , where it gives life to wines of great structure , characterized by the inimitable harmony of colour, aroma and flavour. Fruity and intense , they present themselves on the nose with notes reminiscent of black fruit jam , warm and soft in the mouth, they are suitable both as meditation wines and as an accompaniment to rich dishes based on red meat and game.
The main denomination linked to this vine is undoubtedly Primitivo di Manduria DOC , whose production area includes several municipalities in the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. The wines of the denomination are powerful, warm, complex and enveloping reds, such as those of San Marzano, Paolo Leo and Vespa Vignaioli (over the years all awarded the Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso) or Leone de Castris, Tormaresca, Masseria Altemura and Pure Stone.
In addition to Salento, the other large area of Puglia that has proven to be particularly suited to the cultivation of is that of the Murge, where it is expressed with greater finesse and elegance in the Gioia del Colle Primitivo denomination wines. The wines of Polvanera and Coppi (both Tre Bicchieri) come from here.
