Montagne de Reims

The Montagne de Reims is one of Champagne’s most important areas for Pinot Noir. The massif stretches between Reims and Épernay and includes some of the region’s best-known villages, including Verzenay, Verzy, Mailly-Champagne, Ambonnay and Bouzy. It is anything but uniform: exposure, altitude and soil composition change from one slope to another, giving rise to wines with different personalities.

Where the Montagne de Reims is located

The Montagne de Reims occupies the northern heart of Champagne and forms a wooded rise between the city of Reims and the Marne Valley. Vineyards develop mainly on the slopes of the massif, where the topography favors good drainage and conditions suitable for growing vines. As elsewhere in Champagne, the subsoil is characterized by craie, a porous limestone rock capable of storing water and releasing it gradually to the roots. Depending on the area, the craie is accompanied by clays, sands and other materials that contribute to the diversity of the wines.

The two slopes of the Montagne de Reims

To understand the Montagne de Reims, one must also consider vineyard exposure. On the north-facing side lie some of the area’s most representative communes, such as Verzenay, Verzy, Mailly-Champagne and Sillery. The exposure and ripening conditions contribute to wines of great tension, with pronounced acidity and a structure that can age for a long time.

On the southern side, facing the Marne Valley, you find Ambonnay, Bouzy and Louvois. Here, exposure can favor a more generous ripening of the grapes and yield broader Pinot Noir, with ripe fruit and a richer texture. The differences between the two sides are not absolute, but they help to read the variety of expressions that characterizes the area.

The nine Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims

The Montagne de Reims is home to nine of Champagne’s 17 Grand Cru communes: Ambonnay, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Bouzy, Louvois, Mailly-Champagne, Puisieulx, Sillery, Verzenay and Verzy. These are territories that over time have built a strong viticultural identity and are often associated with profound interpretations of Pinot Noir. Verzenay and Verzy are known for wines with a more vertical, taut structure, while Ambonnay and Bouzy are often linked to broader, riper expressions. Within this framework, each village nonetheless retains its own characteristics, tied to the specific vineyard sites and the work of the producers.

The grape varieties of the Montagne de Reims

Pinot Noir is the emblematic grape of the Montagne de Reims and accounts for most of the area under vine, but its character changes markedly from one village to another. In the eastern areas, particularly in Villers-Marmery and Trépail, Chardonnay plays an important role and gives wines with a profile different from those of the Côte des Blancs. Pinot Meunier rounds out the area’s varietal makeup, especially in places where soil and climate favor its cultivation, contributing to blends with fruit-forward notes and greater approachability.

The style of the Champagnes of the Montagne de Reims

Pinot Noir gives the Champagnes of the Montagne de Reims structure, depth and a generally broader palate. Depending on the village, exposure and the producer’s interpretation, the fruit can range from cherry and small red berries to riper notes of dried fruit and spice. With aging, notes of bread crust, pastry and toasty nuances gradually emerge. Blanc de Noirs are among the most immediate expressions to grasp this character and also shine at the table, with poultry, richer-prepared fish and aged soft cheeses.
