Portuguese wines represent an oenological heritage of great richness and variety, thanks to the presence of numerous indigenous grape varieties and a territory characterized by strong climatic and geographical contrasts. Among the most iconic denominations is Vinho Verde, produced in the north-west of the country. Despite the name, which means “green wine,” referring to its youth rather than its color, there are both white and red versions. The white is the most renowned: light, fresh, with a slight effervescence and pronounced acidity, often made from varieties like Alvarinho and Loureiro. Ideal as an aperitif or paired with fish dishes, Vinho Verde is an emblem of modern, accessible Portuguese viticulture.

Continuing south, the Douro region is famous for its breathtaking landscapes and for producing two great wines: Douro DOC and Porto. The Douro designation includes red, white, and rosé wines. The red wines are dry, often robust and structured, made from grapes like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. The Porto is a fortified dessert wine with a long tradition. There are different types of Porto, each with specific characteristics: the Ruby, young and fruity; the Tawny, aged in barrel, with notes of dried fruit and spices; the Vintage, produced only in exceptional years and meant for long aging; and the Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), similar to Vintage but ready to drink sooner. Each type reveals a different facet of this iconic wine, which continues to represent one of Portugal's greatest prides in the world.
