The Marche

Verdicchio is an indigenous white grape variety of the Marche region, grown mainly in the provinces of Ancona and Macerata. Verdicchio is a versatile wine with a great personality, capable of best expressing the characteristics of the Marche territory, both in its young and fresh version and in its more mature and complex one. The two main denominations of reference are Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is produced in the hills around Jesi, in the province of Ancona, while Verdicchio di Matelica comes from the Alto Esino Valley, in the province of Macerata. These two areas offer different climatic and soil conditions, influencing the organoleptic characteristics of the wines.

Characteristics of the Wines

Verdicchio is distinguished by its freshness, structure, and aromatic complexity. On the nose, it presents floral and fruity notes, often accompanied by hints of almond and anise. On the palate, it is dry, harmonious, with a pleasant sapidity and a characteristic bitter aftertaste.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi tends to be softer and fruitier, while Verdicchio di Matelica, thanks to the more continental climate, offers more structured and mineral wines.

Aging Potential

One of the peculiarities of Verdicchio is its extraordinary aging potential. Thanks to its high acidity and structure, some versions can positively evolve for over twenty years, developing complex aromas of honey, saffron, and hydrocarbon notes.

The Riserva types, both for Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica, require a minimum aging period of 18 months, of which at least 6 in the bottle, and represent the qualitative excellence of this grape variety.
