Description
What type of wine it is
Mustazzo di Sella & Mosca is a red wine from Sardinia that fully showcases the character of the Cannonau grape. Classified as Cannonau di Sardegna, it stands out for a fresh, dynamic style that marries structure with easy drinkability. This red weaves dark-fruit tones with pleasant balsamic notes, shaping an enveloping yet always agile profile on the palate. Thanks to its lively tannins, it offers a satisfying, clearly defined tasting experience.
Where it comes from
The roots of this red lie in Barbagia, a mountainous, hilly area in the heart of Sardinia, a short distance from Nuoro. Here, old vines are cultivated at an altitude of six hundred meters above sea level. The environment is marked by pronounced diurnal temperature swings between day and night, a crucial factor that fosters aromatic development and keeps the fruit’s vibrancy high. This strong sense of place translates into an energetic, taut sip with distinct aromatic clarity.
How it is made
Vinification begins with destemming and a gentle crushing of the grapes. This is followed by fermentation and maceration during which the délestage technique is employed, essential for extracting color and polyphenolic texture in a balanced way. The wine then undergoes maturation that combines ageing in wooden casks and in concrete tanks. This dual technical choice balances the oxidative evolution imparted by wood with the fruit’s crispness preserved by concrete.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows a bright, compact ruby-red hue. The nose reveals a clean, inviting bouquet dominated by intense blackberry aromas and forest-floor notes, interlaced with refreshing balsamic nuances that add depth. On the palate it is nimble, supported by vibrant freshness and a well-present yet never angular tannic weave. The progression culminates in a long, fleshy finish that extends the fruit sensations perceived on the nose.
Food pairing
Its palate weight and lively tannins make it an ideal match for roasted red meats and mixed grills. Its aromatic profile pairs beautifully with intense, savory dishes, including long-aged cheeses. True to its geographic origins, the quintessential regional pairing is the traditional Porceddu sardo, whose succulent meat finds the right counterpoint in the wine’s dynamism. Equally apt is a board of aged Pecorino that enhances its lingering flavor.
When to serve it
This Sardinian red is the right choice for convivial lunches and dinners, such as an autumn or winter dinner, or a Sunday lunch with a rich, sociable feel, where the menu calls for a glass with structure and good agility. It is especially suitable when you want to bring to the table a wine with a fresh, dynamic character that cleanses the palate without overpowering the dishes. To fully appreciate its balsamic bouquet and fleshy finish, serve at 16-18°C for a rewarding, well-balanced tasting experience.
