Description
What type of wine it is
Adega Vila Real Reserva is a red wine from the Douro made from Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional grapes. It has a ruby color with garnet hues and an intense, structured style, made for the table. A short spell in oak rounds out its character.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Baixo-Corgo, the westernmost and coolest subzone of the Douro. The vineyards lie on schist soils, facing south and west, with a high planting density, and are located between 100 and 550 meters of altitude. Selecting grapes from different elevations seeks a good balance of aromatics, structure and acidity.
How it's made
The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed immediately upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperature, with intense, extended macerations that build more structure and volume. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French and American oak. Part of the wine then ages 12 months in oak, mostly French, with a small share of American oak.
Tasting notes
The aromatic profile is intense, with ripe red fruits and spicy notes. On the palate it is velvety and intense, with a full structure supported by freshness. The finish is long, with great persistence.
What it pairs with
Pairs with hearty dishes from Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisine, such as grilled steak, smoked pork and roast lamb. It also goes well with roasted red meats and aged cheeses.
When to serve it
It’s a red for meat-based lunches and dinners, when the table features savory, rich dishes. A large-bowled glass enhances its aromas and structure.
