Description
What kind of wine is it
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from Avignonesi is a red wine made from 100% Sangiovese. It has a medium body, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a well-defined tasting profile. It’s enjoyable right away, but it also has good ageing potential.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Montepulciano in Tuscany, from vineyards located between 270 and 375 metres above sea level. The soils are sedimentary of marine origin, calcareous, with varying amounts of clay and sand. The vines, planted between 1995 and 2017, are trained as bush vines, guyot and spurred cordon. This range of exposures and soils contributes to the wine’s character.
How it’s made
Maceration lasts twenty to twenty-five days at a controlled temperature. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out by yeasts selected from the pied de cuve, a first batch of grapes harvested early to isolate the yeasts present on the skins. The wine then ages for eighteen months in large casks and tonneaux, with oak use that is never intrusive.
Tasting notes
The colour is purple red, lively and of medium intensity. On the nose, small red berries and pomegranate juice open up, with the violet note typical of Sangiovese and subtle hints of vanilla. The palate is lively, flavourful and crisp, with ripe cherry, plum jam and nuances of liquorice on the back-palate. Well-defined tannins and a fresh line of acidity lead to a persistent finish.
What it pairs with
It pairs well with grilled red meats and roasts, which support its tannic structure. It works with pasta with ragù and with medium-aged cheeses, where freshness and fruit cleanse the palate.
When to serve it
It’s suited to lunches and dinners based on meat and to tables seeking a Tuscan red with character yet effortless drinkability. It can be opened now or left in the cellar for a few more years.
