Description
What kind of wine it is
Sforzato di Valtellina Fruttaio Ca’ Rizzieri (Rainoldi) is a complex structured red wine made from Nebbiolo. It originates from Lombardy, in the Valtellina area, and displays a rich style with aging potential that rewards patience. Vinification involves temperature-controlled fermentation with frequent pump-overs and aging for 16-18 months in barriques, a process that shapes its aromatic profile and tannic texture.
Where it comes from
The grapes originate from morainic terraces in the municipalities of Sondrio and Teglio, on mineral-rich, well-drained soils. The continental climate favors balanced ripening. These historic vineyards, particularly suited for Nebbiolo, benefit from strong temperature variations that enhance freshness and structure.
How it’s produced
The harvest is manual and takes place during the first week of October. The grapes are placed in crates and left to naturally dry for 2-3 months, concentrating aromas and sugars. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in stainless steel with pump-overs to extract color and tannins. The wine matures in barriques for 16-18 months, gaining complexity and softness.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it has a deep garnet red color, clear and consistent. The bouquet is very intense, with hints of ripe red fruits, notes of cinchona, tobacco, and subtle spicy nuances from the barrel aging. On the palate, it displays a rich structure, powerful yet polished tannins, all sustained by softness and a balance that prolongs the finish.
Food pairings
Sforzato di Valtellina pairs well with grilled red meats, braised game, and aged cheeses with a bold flavor. It complements robust dishes with intense aromas.
When to serve it
This wine is suitable for immediate enjoyment as well as for extended aging in the cellar. With longer refinement, tertiary nuances and enhanced roundness become more apparent.
