Description
What kind of wine it is
The Pinot Nero Riserva Curlan by Girlan is a red wine from Alto Adige obtained from grapes grown in the micro-zone of the same name. Its style stands out for an elegant and structured profile that combines a well-defined tannic framework with remarkable aromatic depth. The meticulous vinification, followed by a long maturation period, produces a sip that expertly balances freshness and volume. It is ideal for those seeking a high-caliber red with a long-lasting finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the historic micro-zone of Girlan in Alto Adige. The vineyards are located at about 500 meters above sea level and are rooted in poor, stony soils characterized by morainic deposits resting on volcanic porphyritic rock. This unique soil composition, together with the draining nature of the terrain, ensures the grapes mature evenly. The mineral influence of the subsoil gives the wine a marked sapidity and precision that unmistakably defines its character.
How it is produced
The grapes are hand harvested around mid-September and carefully transported in small containers to preserve their integrity. This is followed by destemming and a steel fermentation that lasts twenty-five days to ensure the ideal extraction of color and noble components. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes a significant barrique aging period of twenty months. An additional rest in bottle for eighteen months completes its development.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby red hue, evidence of attentive winemaking. The bouquet is a captivating weave where forest fruit aromas and notes of black cherry are enriched by a distinct herbal spiciness that lends definition to the bouquet. On the palate, it is immediately elegant and full-bodied, supported by a solid structure and well-developed tannins. The finish offers a clean closure and maintains continuity between the fruity notes and the spicy thread.
Food pairings
Its important structure makes it a natural partner for main courses based on red meat and game, as it can balance the aromatic intensity of such dishes. It goes perfectly with tasty roasts, especially those enriched with aromatic herbs reminiscent of the wine’s bouquet. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses thanks to its sapidity. Locally, it best complements full-bodied, rich recipes such as classic cervo in salmì (venison stew).
When to serve
This red is the ideal choice to accompany hearty dinners, offering right from the start a notable integration of its structural components. You may open and enjoy it for its lively aromatic clarity, or age it in your cellar to take advantage of its interesting ageing potential if you wish to wait for a more harmonized taste. The advice is to serve it with structured food pairings where it expresses a measured balance between lively fruit and a savory backbone.
