Description

Masseto is excellence transformed into wine. A legendary wine, originating from a terroir with uniquely distinctive characteristics. Universally recognized as one of the most prestigious wines in the world.

Obtained from a masterful interpretation of pure Merlot grapes, sourced from three sections of the Masseto vineyard, namely Masseto Centrale, Masseto Junior and Masseto Alto, benefited by the presence of a mild-temperate climate and breezes blowing nearby the marine expanse.

Vintage 2003

The 2003 growing season was marked by an exceptionally hot and dry summer, with temperatures well above average and almost no rainfall from April to September. However, abundant rains from the previous year left sufficient water reserves in the soil to mitigate the effects of the climatic stress. The differences between the various sections of the vineyard became very apparent, leading to the harvest of Masseto Alto already on August 25th, while Masseto Centrale, thanks to the greater freshness of its clay soil, reached optimal ripeness only on September 18th.

Masseto 2003 was obtained exclusively from the grapes of Masseto Centrale, as only this area guaranteed an ideal balance in an extremely hot year. After an extremely careful manual selection of the bunches, aiming to eliminate those affected by sun and heat, fermentation and maceration lasted for 25 days. The wine was then aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels, followed by an additional 12 months of bottle aging. Yields were very low, with a production reduced by 40% compared to the average.

The Masseto 2003 stands out for its intensity and expressive maturity, but at the same time for its surprising balance and freshness. The Merlot, pushed to the limit by the extreme conditions of the year, was masterfully interpreted thanks to the vocation of the clay soil. The wine presents a mature, almost exotic character, but avoids any excess of opulence, maintaining a refined integrity and drinkability. Already enjoyable, it continues to evolve positively over time.
