Description
What kind of wine is it
Masseto is a Bolgheri red made from Merlot grapes from the eponymous vineyard. It has a substantial, elegant structure and is at the same time fresh and rounded, with a harmony that balances tannic grip and suppleness. It is a wine for long ageing that can remain in the cellar for over 15 years.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Masseto vineyard in the Bolgheri area on the Tuscan coast, divided into three sub-zones: Masseto Centrale, Masseto Junior and Masseto Alto. The mild, temperate climate and the sea breezes that blow nearby promote balanced ripening of the grapes. The terroir is uniquely suited and imparts a distinctive signature to the wine.
How it is made
The harvest is carried out with great care. The clusters then undergo a gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless-steel tanks for 25 days, with maceration on the skins. After the first 12 months of separate ageing in barriques, the wine remains in the same vessels for a further 12 months after blending, for a total of 24 months of maturation.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows a ruby-red colour. On the nose it opens with a broad, intense bouquet recalling cherry and plum, accompanied by complex notes of dark chocolate and mushrooms. On the palate it has notable structure and elegance; it is fresh and rounded, with pleasing harmony and tannic grip.
Food pairings
Pairs with substantial dishes based on roast meats and game. It also goes well with medium- and long-aged cheeses, where the wine’s structure and freshness support the saltiness.
When to serve it
It is a red for occasions when a structured, elegant profile is sought. It is best to uncork the bottle in advance and serve it in a large-bowled glass. Suitable both for immediate enjoyment and for cellaring for over 15 years.
