Description
What type of wine is it
The Toscana Sangiovese Fontalloro by Fèlsina is a Tuscan red wine with a structured, complex profile. Made from Sangiovese grapes, it stands out for a well-defined tannic framework and deep aromatic concentration. The meticulous winemaking process gives it remarkable aging potential, ensuring a solid balance between flavor intensity and suppleness. This terroir-driven expression offers an authentic take on the variety, combining precise architecture with great persistence on the palate.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Tuscany, from vineyards located along the boundary between the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations. The particular geography, split over two slopes with different exposures, creates a very distinctive growing environment. This transitional area allows the vines to express varied territorial nuances that translate into a rigorous, measured imprint. The identity of the place is reflected in the glass, outlining a terroir-driven origin that highlights the variety’s characteristics.
How it is made
Production begins with the manual harvesting of the grapes, carried out at two different times to carefully select the best bunches. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature, followed by an almost three-week maceration on the skins with punch-downs and pump-overs. This targeted technique favors optimal extraction of color and tannic components. The wine then ages in first- and second-use barriques for eighteen to twenty-two months. Before release, it continues to rest with bottle aging for a further eight to twelve months.
Tasting notes
On the eye it reveals a deep ruby red color, marked by a rich, compact hue. The nose offers a complex bouquet, with clear aromas of tobacco and wet earth, enriched by notes of blackcurrant and blackberry. A pleasant spicy hint of licorice joins in. The palate is full and enveloping, supported by soft, substantial tannins that lead to a long, persistent finish, confirming the wine’s solid overall structure.
Food pairings
The pronounced structure of this red makes it perfect with pasta dishes with ragù and recipes based on red meats, including grilled cuts. Its persistence and spicy notes pair very well with intense preparations such as game or aged cheeses. In the Tuscan culinary tradition, it shows its potential alongside a classic bistecca alla fiorentina. An equally successful pairing is pappardelle with wild boar ragù, a dish that enhances the wine’s texture and long finish.
When to serve it
This Sangiovese is ideal for an autumn or winter dinner, or for a hearty, convivial Sunday lunch. It is advisable to serve it after a brief aeration, to best appreciate its aromatic complexity. Perfect for focused tasting moments, it is also well suited to sharing on special occasions with family or friends, elevating structured, flavorful dishes.
