Description
What kind of wine it is
Solaia 1998 by Marchesi Antinori is a great Tuscan red wine produced at the prestigious Tenuta Tignanello, in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Created from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, it represents one of the most iconic labels of Italian winemaking. It is made exclusively in exceptional vintages and stands out for a style that combines power, elegance, and aromatic depth. The 1998 vintage expresses a harmonious balance between structure and finesse, showing the typical ageing potential that has made this wine famous over time.
Where it comes from
The wine originates from the eponymous vigneto Solaia located at Tenuta Tignanello, in the Chianti Classico area in Tuscany. This hilly region, characterized by stony soils and a climate suitable for viticulture, allows the grapes to reach full and harmonious ripeness. In 1998 the region experienced a particularly warm and stable summer, which favored a slow and regular grape ripening. These weather conditions enabled the development of great aromatic concentration while preserving a good natural freshness.
How it is produced
The grapes are harvested between late September and mid-October, when they reach the perfect balance of ripeness and freshness. In the cellar, the bunches are gently destemmed and the berries carefully selected before crushing. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place in 60 hl truncated cone-shaped tanks, with careful extraction of aromatic and tannic components. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques and continues to age in French and Hungarian oak barrels for about 18 months. The different batches, vinified separately by variety, are finally blended to create the final blend.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows a deep ruby red color. The bouquet is rich and layered, with notes of blackcurrant, hints of vanilla, touches of tobacco, and suggestions of earth and mint adding complexity to the aromatic profile. On the palate it is dense, structured, and harmonious, supported by well-integrated tannins that accompany the sip with elegance. The finish is long and persistent, a sign of the vintage's great quality and its natural predisposition to ageing.
Pairings
Thanks to its structure and aromatic intensity, it pairs perfectly with substantial land-based cuisine. Ideal with grilled red meats, roasts, and game dishes, where the wine's complexity highlights the depth of flavors. It is also well-suited to accompany aged cheeses and traditional Tuscan recipes such as bistecca alla fiorentina or braised wild boar.
When to serve it
Solaia 1998 is an ideal bottle for special occasions and dedicated tastings, when you want to enjoy a wine capable of expressing maturity, elegance, and complexity. Served at around 16–18 °C in large glasses, it allows the bouquet to gradually open up in the glass. The structure and balance reached by this vintage have given it an excellent ageing potential. The bottle comes from a private collection, stored in proper conditions and checked by experts for condition and authenticity.
