Description
What kind of wine is it
Solaia 2003 by Marchesi Antinori is a prestigious Tuscan red wine created from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc, produced at the historic Tenuta Tignanello in the heart of Chianti Classico. This label stands as one of the most iconic expressions of Italian viticulture and is made exclusively in exceptional vintages. The 2003 vintage stands out for its rich, sun-drenched, and enveloping character, skillfully combining concentration, depth, and refined elegance.
Origin
The wine originates from the namesake vigneto Solaia, located at Tenuta Tignanello in the hilly area of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. Soils rich in stones and the Mediterranean climate allow the grapes to achieve full ripeness. The 2003 vintage was marked by one of the hottest summers of the decade, with high temperatures and limited rainfall accelerating ripening. Careful vineyard management ensured balanced grapes, resulting in rich and concentrated fruit for a Solaia of great character.
How is it made?
The grapes are harvested between the end of September and mid-October, with careful selection of the best bunches. In the cellar, the bunches are gently destemmed and the berries meticulously checked before pressing. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration occur in 60 hl conical-shaped tanks, where aromatic and tannic components are carefully extracted. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques and continues to age in French and Hungarian oak barrels for about 18 months. The different lots, vinified separately by varietal, are finally blended to create the final blend.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it shows a deep and intense ruby red. The bouquet is rich and enveloping, with aromas of ripe fruit, blackberry, and plum, accompanied by elegant notes of spices, cedar, and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied, velvety, and structured, with tannins that began strongly but have become softer and more harmonious over time. The finish is broad and persistent, echoing the spicy and mineral nuances perceived on the nose.
Food pairings
Thanks to its significant structure and aromatic richness, it goes perfectly with robust land-based cuisine. It’s ideal with grilled red meats, roasts, and game dishes, but it also pairs beautifully with braised meats and aged cheeses. In Tuscan tradition, it naturally complements bistecca alla fiorentina or flavorful recipes like stewed wild boar.
When to serve it
Solaia 2003 is a wine to reserve for special occasions or dedicated tastings, when you want to enjoy a bottle capable of expressing power, elegance, and aromatic complexity. Served at approximately 16–18 °C in large glasses, it allows the bouquet to open gradually in the glass. The bottle comes from a private collection, stored under ideal conditions and inspected by experts to guarantee its condition and authenticity.
