Ama is a small medieval village in the hills between Gaiole and Radda in the Chianti region, right in the heart of Chianti Classico country. Here, at the end of the 12th century, a noble family arrived and built the castle (il Castello), which was destroyed at the end of the Middle Ages. The Castello di Ama winery was founded in 1972 by four families and is still run by a member of one of these families today.
Castello di Ama almost exclusively produces red wine and is most famous of all for its L’Apparita (93 pt JS), the forefather of pure Tuscan Merlot and a cult wine since 1985. The Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Castello di Ama Vigneto Bellavista (94 pt WS) is also of the very highest standard, one of the oldest Chianti Classico wines and made using Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera grapes in small qualities and only in extraordinary vintages since 1978. The winery's other two Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines, the San Lorenzo (96 pt JS) and the La Casuccia (95 pt WS), complete the Chianti range, which is also enriched by a unique Purple Rose, a rosé made with Sangiovese and Merlot grapes that is certainly worth trying.
