The Mazzei family is one of the most famous and rich families of history in the world of Italian wine. The Tenuta del Castello di Fonterutoli, located a few kilometers from Castellina in Chianti, represents the heart of the Mazzei possessions. With its 650 hectares in total, of which just over a hundred vineyards, it is the estate where some of the most famous wines of Tuscany are born. In the mid-90s Mazzei bought a 70-hectare estate in the Maremma, in the splendid and gentle hilly area that extends between Grosseto and Montiano. Thus was born the Tenuta di Belguardo , where white, red and rosé wines with a classic Mediterranean face are produced. The desire to experiment and compare with other realities pushes the Mazzei family to look for other territories in which to continue their adventure in the world of wine. In 2003 an area with great potential was identified in the Val di Noto , a few kilometers south of the Sicilian Baroque capital. Tenuta Zisola is located near an ancient beam and covers a total area of fifty hectares. The vineyards are surrounded by olive groves, citrus and almond trees, in an intact environmental context and with great biodiversity. The vines are planted with saplings, with a high plant density and low yields, so as to produce few clusters per plant, of high quality and with an intense aromatic richness. The Mediterranean climate, always windy thanks to the sea breezes, proved perfect for the cultivation of the vine. The soils are poor, characterized by the superficial presence of sands and sandstones , which insist on a deep layer of very pure and friable limestone. It is in this extraordinary context that great wines are born, produced with the indigenous vines typical of the territory and with the international varieties that have long been set in Sicilian land.

The labels are all of a high standard, starting with the white Sicilia DOC Azisa , made with a blend of cricket (85%) and catarratto (15%), two grapes with great potential, which guarantee citrus, fruity aromas, a fresh sip and slightly aromatic. Zisola dedicates two labels to the main grape of the territory, Nero d'Avola, Sicily Noto Rosso DOC Zisola , with a pleasantly fragrant and fruity character and Noto Rosso DOC Doppio Zeta, the most intense, complex and rich version of Nero d'Avola , put on the market after aging for 16 months in French oak barrels. The other labels of the estate are made with international vines. Terre Siciliane IGT Achilles is a pure syrah with a warm and Mediterranean face, aged for 16 months in French oak barriques, while Terre Siciliane IGT Effe Emme is an intense and elegant version of pure petit verdot. A red with great structure and depth, with a vigorous tannic texture and an extraordinary longevity.
