Description
What kind of wine it is
The Amarone Costasera in the Christmas Edition gift box from Masi is a red from the historic area of Valpolicella Classica. It is made from Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara and shows a structured, complex style. Vinification includes the appassimento of the grapes on bamboo racks and subsequent fermentation in stainless steel. Ageing for 24 months in Slavonian oak casks brings elegance and a profile suited to long ageing.
Where it comes from
The vines grow in Valpolicella Classica, in Veneto, along slopes overlooking Lake Garda. The continental climate, tempered by lake breezes, favours balanced ripening of the grapes. The gravelly, limestone soils, rich in minerals, add aromatic complexity and structure, also thanks to elevations between 200 and 350 metres.
How it's made
The Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. After a late harvest, the bunches rest for about four months on bamboo racks in controlled appassimento, which concentrates sugars and aromas. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at a monitored temperature. Part of the wine ages for 24 months in Slavonian oak casks, while the rest matures in barriques and shows greater structure and roundness.
Tasting notes
On sight it displays a deep ruby red with garnet highlights. The nose offers a broad bouquet of stewed fruit, plums and ripe cherries, with notes of cocoa, coffee and sweet spices. The palate is full and enveloping, with soft, well-defined tannins supported by good freshness. The finish lingers with hints of liquorice and tobacco.
Food pairing
Costasera pairs with grilled red meats, roasts and game such as braised venison or wild boar. It is also suitable for hearty stews and aged cheeses, including Parmigiano Reggiano. A typical local pairing is risotto all’Amarone, while red-wine braises enhance the wine’s structure and intensity.
When to serve it
This Amarone Classico shows good potential for development in bottle and can be enjoyed even after several years. Serve between 18 and 20 °C in a large glass, so the aromatic spectrum can express itself at its best. Further bottle ageing fosters harmony between tannins and aromas and makes the tasting more balanced.
