Description
What kind of wine it is
Amarone della Valpolicella Selezione Antonio Castagnedi by Tenuta Sant’Antonio is a full-bodied red and structured wine, produced in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. Made mainly from Corvina, alongside Rondinella, Croatina, and Oseleta, it stands out for its complex style and rich structure, with an elegant profile and remarkable aging potential. The winemaking process includes drying the grapes, followed by fermentation in stainless steel and aging in French oak barrels, which contribute balance and depth.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from vineyards located in the municipalities of Colognola ai Colli and Mezzane di Sotto; both are in the province of Verona within the Valpolicella Classica area. The region enjoys a continental climate, limestone-clay soils, and significant temperature variation between day and night. The vineyards are situated at 200–300 meters altitude, ensuring a gradual ripening of the grapes and a balance between sugars and acidity.
How it is produced
The grapes are hand-harvested exclusively, with careful cluster selection. This is followed by a period of drying in a ventilated loft to concentrate aromas and sugars. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with selected yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for at least two years, developing structure, aromatic complexity, and smooth tannins.
Tasting notes
In the glass it displays an intense ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose reveals aromas of cherry and ripe plum, with hints of licorice, black pepper, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, with pleasant savoriness and a balanced acidity that provide freshness. The body is full, the tannins are rounded and polished, and the finish is long with fruity returns and toasted nuances.
Food pairings
The structure and aromatic richness of this Amarone are well-suited to truffle-based first courses and flavorful risottos. It pairs well with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and with grilled game or red meats. A classic pairing is with bigoli in salsa, where the savoriness of the sauce matches the wine’s soft tannins and depth.
When to serve
This Amarone della Valpolicella shows its complexity at its best after a few years of bottle aging, thanks to its structure and maturation in barrels. The wine has a aging potential of more than a decade. To enhance its aromas and persistence, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 16–18°C after adequate aeration, allowing the glass to offer depth and balance.
