Description
What kind of wine it is
The Barolo Arione by Enzo Boglietti is a red wine made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes, from a vineyard in La Morra. It has a supple profile, with pleasant acidity and delicate tannins, and a bouquet that evolves in the glass from sweet fruit to darker, spicier notes. It is a Barolo built for aging.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Arione vineyard in La Morra, in the Langhe, in Piedmont. Planted in 1999, the vineyard sits at 450 meters of elevation with southwest/south exposure, on loamy soil with silt, clay and sand, alkaline and low in organic matter.
How it is made
Fermentation lasts 20 days at controlled temperature, with daily punch-downs and pump-overs, followed by a post-fermentation submerged-cap maceration of 60 days, which gives structure and depth to the Nebbiolo. Aging is completed in 24 months of French oak.
Tasting notes
In appearance it is an intense ruby red, vibrant and deep. On opening, sweet, candied wild strawberry stands out; gradually tertiary aromas darken the bouquet, with bitter, toasted, smoky and spicy notes over a background of dried green tea leaves and a fresh herbal feel. On the palate it is supple, with pleasant acidity and delicate tannins. The finish is dense and long, with a retro-nasal return of strawberry, yet also fresh and herbaceous.
Food pairing
Barolo Arione pairs well with the signature dishes of Piedmontese cuisine: brasato al Barolo, red meats, game, lamb and aged cheeses. The suppleness on the palate and the delicate tannin suit rich, slow-cooked dishes.
When to serve it
This is a red for special occasions and for those seeking a Barolo with a long evolution: it has an aging potential of up to 15–20 years. A large-bowled glass and some time after opening allow the bouquet to unfold and shift from sweet fruit to darker notes.
