Description

What type of wine is it

The Champagne Brut Cuvée Louise from Pommery is a 2008 Vintage, the Maison’s prestige cuvée, dedicated to its founder Madame Louise Pommery. It has a pale gold, crystal-clear color with delicate highlights, and a fine, persistent perlage. The 2008 marks a return to classicism in Champagne, and the wine expresses that style: tension, precision, freshness and a creamy, silky texture.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from a reserved and strictly delimited vineyard area, composed only of three Grands Crus: Avize and Cramant in the Côte des Blancs, and Aÿ, in the heart of Champagne’s hillsides. The plots, often mid-slope and well-exposed, are chosen for their site and for the aromatic richness of the grapes. Not all are used in every vintage. After a cool, sunny summer, the 2008 harvest took place under ideal conditions, with a good balance between sugars and acidity.

How it is made

The blend is predominantly Chardonnay, with a touch of Pinot Noir. The harvest is manual, selecting only the best bunches, followed by specific pressing and winemaking procedures to preserve the wine’s purity. After the secondary fermentation in bottle, the wine rests for a long time on the lees in the Maison’s chalk cellars. The dosage is deliberately minimal, among the lightest of Champagne’s prestige cuvées. After disgorgement, the wine rests at least a further six months in the cellar.

Tasting notes

The bouquet opens with light toasted notes, then dried fruit and citrus emerge, supported by a chalky minerality. With aeration, delicate hazelnut, orange zest and subtle smoky notes join in. The attack is direct and precise. A vibrant freshness contrasts with a creamy, silky texture. The finish is long, with aromas of apricot and quince and a saline minerality.

Food pairing

Pairs with shellfish, baked fish and scallops, which highlight its freshness and salinity. It also works well with delicate risottos, white meats and semi-hard cheeses, complementing their creaminess.

When to serve it

This is a Champagne for important occasions and meaningful toasts, also suitable as a gift. Serve in a generous glass that allows complexity and aromas to open gradually, and give it a few minutes in the glass. With its structure and tension it is also suitable for ageing in the cellar.
