Description
What kind of wine is it
Cavanera Contrada Marchesa Rovo delle Coturnie by Firriato is a red wine from Etna made from Nerello Mascalese grapes and part of the winery’s Volcanic line. It is full-bodied, with firm tannins and a strong sense of place. It’s a characterful red, crafted for those seeking an intense, distinctive expression of the volcano.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Contrada Marchesa, in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern slope of Etna at about 700–750 meters above sea level. The soil is sandy, of volcanic origin and well-draining. These elements are reflected in the wine’s mineral and ferrous notes.
How it is made
Harvesting is by hand and takes place in the last ten days of October. Nerello Mascalese ferments as a red with skin maceration and undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine ages for 18 months in oak and then rests for at least 6 months in bottle before release.
Tasting notes
In the glass it is a transparent, bright ruby red. On the nose, pronounced notes of red berries emerge, wrapped in intense hints of nutmeg and black pepper and delicate rose petals, with ferrous and mineral nuances that recall its volcanic origin. On the palate, body prevails, supported by seductive tannins, and it finishes with remarkable length.
Food pairing
Given its structure and tannins, it pairs with grilled red meats, roasts and braised meats. It also works well with game and aged cheeses. Its spicy notes match dishes with bold, intense flavors.
When to serve it
It’s a wine suited to special lunches and dinners, when the main course is meat and a red with personality is desired. After bottle ageing it’s ready to drink, and its structure also allows it to evolve over time.
