Description
What kind of wine is it
Etna Rosso by Monteleone is a red wine made from Nerello Mascalese with a small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio, grown on the slopes of Etna. It stands out for its balanced structure and fine tannic texture, combined with natural freshness and medium body. The vinification takes place in truncated cone-shaped steel vats at controlled temperature, followed by aging in tonneaux and steel which define a clear profile faithful to its territory.
Where it comes from
This wine comes from the slopes of Etna in Sicily, with Monteleone’s vineyards located at about 500 meters near the Alcantara river.
How it is produced
The grapes are destemmed immediately. Fermentation takes place in truncated cone-shaped steel vats at around 23 °C, with maceration on the skins for 10-12 days and daily pump-overs to extract color and tannins. The wine matures for 12 months in a blend of tonneaux and steel, then spends a further six months in the bottle, offering evolution and stability before release.
Tasting notes
It appears a brilliant ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose, red and black fruits such as currant and wild strawberry emerge, alongside hints of black pepper and tobacco. On the palate, it shows harmonious structure, silky tannins, and a fresh, savory finish, with balance and good persistence.
Food pairings
The structure and freshness of this Etna Rosso pair well with roasted and stewed meats like braised beef or oven-roasted leg of lamb. It also works well with semi-aged and aged cheeses with a strong flavor. A local gastronomic suggestion, based on its aromatic profile, is to pair it with pasta alla Norma with fried eggplant, tomato, and salted ricotta.
When to serve it
Serve in large glasses to bring out the aromas. It is ready after a few months, but can evolve with several years of ageing, offering greater aromatic complexity. Suitable for cellar ageing, it maintains its qualities in stable conditions.
