Description
What kind of wine it is
Marqués de Vargas Reserva is a still red wine from Rioja, Spain, made with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo. It ferments in stainless steel tanks and undergoes a partial malolactic fermentation in oak barriques, with a total ageing of 23 months. The style is structured and balanced, with fine tannins and good freshness, supported by the passage in wood.
Where it comes from
The production area is Rioja, one of the best-known wine regions in Spain. The vineyards grow on soils containing calcareous gravel and layered molasse, elements that help provide structure and aromatic complexity. This soil combination is linked to a complex profile and a defined tannic texture, maintaining a balanced approach.
How it is produced
Vinification begins with fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 11 days at a controlled temperature of 30°C. This is followed by 14 days of maceration with daily pump-overs, aimed at achieving a balanced extraction of tannins and fruity aromas. After this phase, the wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation in oak barriques. The total ageing lasts 23 months and is completed without fining or filtration, in order to preserve the wine’s natural characteristics.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it appears an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, it offers complex aromas of ripe red fruits, with hints of cherry and blackberry, accompanied by spicy notes and nuances of vanilla and tobacco resulting from its time in barrique. On the palate it is balanced and structured, with fine tannins and a well-present freshness supporting the progression. The finish is long and persistent.
Food pairings
At the table, it pairs well with grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses, enhancing rich and flavourful dishes thanks to its structure and tannic weave. The fruity character and notes of vanilla and tobacco also pair well with charcoal-grilled dishes and concentrated sauces.
When to serve it
It is ideal when you are looking for a structured, complete red, especially with important second courses and long-aged cheeses. The good freshness and balanced profile also make it suitable for game dishes and grilled preparations. The ageing of 23 months and absence of fining and filtration invite mindful drinking, allowing the aromas to open up in the glass.
