Description

The Chakalaka by Spice Route Wines is a South African red wine produced in the Swartland region, a blend of six varieties selected to best express the richness and cultural diversity of the area. The name, inspired by a traditional spicy mix, reflects the intent to create a harmonious wine representative of the local mosaic.

The grapes come from bush vines grown in deep Koffieklip and Oakleaf soils and are hand-picked. After gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in open concrete tanks with manual punch-downs. Each variety matures for 12 months in used French and American oak barrels, and after blending, the wine is further aged in the same containers.

On the nose, it releases intense aromas of dark fruits, black tea, cocoa, and sweet spices. The palate is lively, with notes of cranberries, cinnamon, and cloves, supported by a fresh and well-integrated tannic structure, leading to an elegant and persistent finish.

It is ideal paired with braised lamb shoulder or a mushroom and lentil stew.
