Description
What kind of wine is it
Gigino by Barbanera is a Tuscan red wine made from a blend of selected grape varieties, crafted for those seeking structure and an accessible profile. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel preserves freshness and aromatic richness, while a brief maturation in oak barrels introduces spicy notes and vanilla. The result is a harmonious wine, with polished tannins and a structure capable of supporting complexity without weighing down the palate.
Where does it come from
Produced on the hills around Volterra, Gigino reflects the Tuscan terroir thanks to a Mediterranean climate influenced by sea breezes and soils with a clay and calcareous-sandy component. The vineyards, at about 300 meters altitude, benefit from significant day-night temperature swings, encouraging complex aromas and natural acidity. This area, with a long winemaking tradition, offers wines with well-defined freshness and structure.
How is it made
The grapes are handpicked and carefully selected, then undergo temperature-controlled maceration for around ten days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by four months in steel and two months in French oak tonneaux, which are medium-sized barrels. Contact with the lees during ageing adds roundness and texture, keeping the wine’s profile fresh and crisp.
Tasting notes
In the glass, Gigino displays an intense ruby red color with violet reflections. The nose reveals ripe red fruits like cherry and plum, with hints of black pepper and vanilla. The palate is full and enveloping, with soft, well-integrated tannins supporting a balanced structure. The finish lingers on red fruit and a touch of licorice.
Food pairings
Gigino’s structure suits grilled red meats, like Florentine steak, and rich pasta dishes with meat ragout. It also pairs well with aged cheeses such as Tuscan pecorino, while the soft tannins enhance game dishes like pappardelle with venison ragù.
When to serve
Gigino best expresses its varietal and territorial character in the first few years after bottling, but can gain in complexity with proper cellaring. The recommended serving temperature is between 16 and 18 °C, ideal for highlighting its aroma and roundness. It is a reliable companion for convivial moments and Tuscan cuisine.
