Description

What kind of wine is it

Masseto is a still red wine made from Merlot grapes grown in Bolgheri, Tuscany. It exhibits a full-bodied and structured style, with a dense tannic texture that is already well balanced and a strong aptitude for long aging. Vinification takes place in wooden and steel vats at controlled temperatures and continues with aging in French oak barriques; blending of the plots defines a precise aromatic profile, supported by well-calibrated acidity.

Where it comes from

This wine is born in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, from a unique vineyard divided into Masseto Centrale, Masseto Junior and Masseto Alto. The area benefits from a mild-temperate climate and proximity to the sea, with constant breezes and significant temperature variations that favor maturation and finesse. Soils rich in clay and minerals offer concentration and clarity, while differences between subzones modulate power and balance. The parcels remain separate in the cellar to preserve the cru’s identity.

How it is produced

Production includes selective harvesting and double manual sorting, followed by gentle pressing. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel and wooden vats between 27 and 30 °C, with extended maceration on the skins for 21–33 days to extract color and tannins with precision. Malolactic fermentation occurs in new French oak barriques. This is followed by about 20 months of aging in barriques, with blending after the first 12 months and further maturation. Before release, the wine rests for a long time in the bottle to integrate the profile and stabilize the influence of wood.

Tasting notes

It shows a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose it is complex and defined, with ripe red fruit, plum and currant, then sweet spices, cocoa and subtle balsamic notes; a mineral component and well-integrated oak complete the profile. On the palate it is rich, with a silky texture, compact and mature tannins, and a balance between freshness and substance. The finish is long and clean, with persistent fruit and spice notes and a progression that hints at further aging potential.

Pairings

Masseto pairs well with important main courses and rich preparations, where structure and tannins meet succulence and aromatic intensity. It is ideal with grilled red meats, roasts, game and braised dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. In Tuscany, it enhances Florentine steak and peposo all’imprunetina, while in Italian cuisine, it pairs well with stewed wild boar or beef braised in red wine. The spicy and silky notes also work beautifully with aromatic herbs and concentrated sauces.

When to serve it

This is a red wine for occasions calling for great intensity yet ready harmony, suitable for structured dinners and meat dishes. It is best served at 16–18 °C, after atmospheric exposure to open up the aromas and soften the tannins, with air time adjusted according to the bottle’s evolution. It has excellent aging potential and can be enjoyed even after many years, with an optimal window between 15 and 25 years. This bottle comes from a private collection stored in suitable conditions, with its state and authenticity confirmed by experts.
