Description
What kind of wine is it
Il Guercio by Tenuta di Carleone is a red wine from Tuscany made from Sangiovese grapes grown in vineyards in Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena. This is a dry, focused wine with medium body and refined tannins, designed to be a reliable companion at the table. The choice to vinify and age in cement, with a small portion of grapes fermenting with stems, aims to preserve a clear profile and a balanced texture.
Where does it come from
The grapes come from vineyards located in Radda in Chianti, in the Siena area. Tenuta di Carleone was founded in 2012 by Karl Egger, with support from Sean O’Callaghan, and operates according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture and a low-intervention winemaking approach. The name “Il Guercio” is taken from Sean’s nickname.
How it is produced
The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese. Vinification takes place in cement tanks for about five months, with some grapes fermenting with stems. This is followed by about a year of aging in the same vessels, a choice that avoids wood contact and preserves aromatic integrity and fruit precision.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows an intense ruby red color. On the nose, there are hints of black berries and a delicate note of dark chocolate. The palate is balanced and refined, with silky tannins and a long, clean finish consistent with the aromatic profile.
Pairings
It pairs effortlessly with moderately structured dishes. It is particularly well suited to savoury pies, semi-aged cheeses, and roast turkey, where its tannic texture and overall balance offer support without overpowering the food.
When to serve
This is a red wine fitting for convivial lunches and dinners, thanks to its precise and easy-drinking profile. It performs best at 16–18 °C; a brief aeration before serving, especially when young, helps to open up the fruit and soften the tannin. It is enjoyable immediately and, if well stored, will evolve in the bottle for several years.
