Description
What type of wine is it
The Montebello di Badia a Coltibuono is a red wine born from a blend of indigenous Tuscan varieties, including Mammolo, Ciliegiolo, Pugnitello, Colorino, Sanforte, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo, Fogliatonda and Sangiovese. This varietal combination, unusual for its breadth, yields a wine of great complexity and a strong sense of place, a direct expression of Vigna Montebello.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Vigna Montebello, located in Gaiole in Chianti, in the Monti in Chianti area, Tuscany. The vineyards grow on medium-textured calcareous clays rich in stones, a soil that contributes to the wine’s structure and minerality.
How it is made
Each variety is grown, harvested, fermented and aged separately. Vinification takes place in small vats with indigenous yeasts and manual punch-downs. This is followed by 20–24 months of aging in barriques, a further maturation of at least six months in vats and oak casks, and finally an additional six months of bottle aging.
Tasting notes
It shows a ruby-red color. On the nose, intense notes of ripe red fruit emerge, with hints of black cherry, redcurrant and pomegranate. On the palate it is soft, marked by a subtle sweetness and a reprise of the fruity sensations perceived on the nose, with a long finish of intensity.
What it pairs with
This wine pairs particularly well with game, roast beef, grilled and stewed meats. It is also surprisingly good with well-aged cheeses and chocolate, where its subtle sweetness and persistent aromatics find an interesting counterpoint.
When to serve it
It is a wine suited to substantial meat- or game-based meals, where its varietal complexity can fully express itself. It also lends itself well to closing the meal paired with chocolate, for a finish of great character.
