Description
What kind of wine it is
Valtellina Superiore Grumello by Rainoldi is a red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes, called Chiavennasca in Valtellina. It originates in the Grumello area of Lombardy and is distinguished by its elegance and structure. The ageing continues in large oak barrels. The profile remains balanced, with good freshness, finely chiselled tannins and an ability to evolve.
Where it comes from
The Grumello vineyards occupy the Rhaetian slopes between Sondrio and Montagna in Valtellina, at altitudes between 350 and 600 metres. The alpine climate with strong temperature shifts encourages slow and complete grape ripening.
How it is produced
Harvesting is done by hand in crates to preserve the bunches. After gentle pressing, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks with maceration on the skins. Once fermentation ends, the wine matures for 20 months in large oak barrels, then rests two months in steel for blending. A further maturation of at least six months in bottle in a cool cellar completes the process and expresses harmony and stability.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows an intense ruby red colour with garnet highlights. On the nose it offers a refined and complex profile, with ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, toasted hazelnut notes and light sweet spices from the wood ageing. On the palate it offers balanced freshness, soft tannins, medium to full body and a persistent finish with returns of ripe fruit and a delicate balsamic hint.
Food pairings
Valtellina Superiore Grumello pairs well with white and red meats, roasts, braised dishes and oven-cooked vegetables. It is ideal with pizzoccheri from Valtellina and with bresaola topped with Grana Padano flakes. It also pairs with porcini mushroom risotto and braised beef, enhancing the wine's structure and fruit component.
When to serve
Nebbiolo’s structure best expresses its character two to six years after harvest, when balance and aromatic complexity come to the fore. The wine is enjoyable young for its freshness and aromas, or after bottle ageing up to eight years for more mature notes. We recommend serving in slightly large tulip-shaped glasses to fully appreciate its qualities.
