The Balvenie
The Balvenie is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery based in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, Scotland. It was built by William Grant next to the Glenfiddich distillery; its first distillation dates back to 1893, and to this day the distillery is owned by William Grant & Sons.
The Balvenie’s identity rests on five rare crafts, carefully preserved over time. The distillery grows a portion of its own barley and malts it in its traditional floor maltings, one of the few still operating in Scotland: the barley is steeped in spring water, turned by hand, and dried with anthracite and a measured amount of peat.
The copper stills, whose shape profoundly influences the taste, have changed little since opening and are maintained by the in-house coppersmith. Equally central is the work of the distillery’s coopers, who prepare and maintain the casks, toasting the wood just enough to release its aromas, because casks play a fundamental role in the whisky’s character.
The fifth craft is that of the Malt Master. For decades the role was held by David C. Stewart MBE, who joined the distillery in 1962 at the age of 17; in 2022, after six years of apprenticeship at his side, he was succeeded by Kelsey McKechnie, who today is responsible for the quality of every bottle, maturation in Dufftown, and the development of new expressions.
The result is a single malt with a distinctive character, offering soft notes of vanilla, rich spices, depth and body, which makes The Balvenie one of the most artisanal single malts in Speyside.
