Vinos de Potrero
Vinos de Potrero is a winery in Gualtallary, a winegrowing micro-region of the Valle de Uco, in the province of Mendoza, Argentina. The project began in 2008 with the purchase of the first vineyard and, after an initial experimental phase, bottled its first wine in 2012, then grew step by step.
The name evokes the 'potrero', the makeshift football pitch where you play on poor, difficult ground: just as on those fields, according to the winery, it is the toughest conditions that bring out the best qualities. And that is what happens in the vineyards, at around 1,350 meters above sea level, at the foot of Monte Tupungato.
All the grapes come from four small adjoining vineyards, each between 3.4 and 4.6 hectares, farmed the same way but managed as distinct lots. The soils are alluvial and deep, sandy-loam, rich in stones and with a high percentage of limestone. Exposure is predominantly north-facing and the slight eastward slope favors the drainage of cold air. During the growing season the area records the province’s lowest temperatures, with strong day-night temperature swings.
At the core of the philosophy is the terroir: quality is born in the vineyard, where soil, climate and variety determine the wine’s character. The range includes Chardonnay de Potrero, Malbec de Potrero, the Reserva wines of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir, the Gran Reserva Malbec, and El Debut de Potrero, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc micro-vinified in 500-liter vessels and aged 18 months in wood. The lineup is rounded out by Naranjo Gualtallary, an orange wine from Chardonnay.
With wines exported to several countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, Vinos de Potrero brings to the glass the authentic expression of Gualtallary and the higher reaches of the Valle de Uco, combining ambitious standards with a desire to keep learning.
