Kloster Eberbach
The cathedral of Riesling and Pinot Noir
Kloster Eberbach is a former Cistercian abbey located in the hilly Rheingau region , on the banks of the Rhine, and its cellar boasts a 900-year history. Founded in 1136 by Bernardo di Chiaravalle, who brought the technique of viticulture to the region with the Burgundian monks , the monastery was the largest European wine center throughout the Middle Ages , with over 300 hectares of vineyards under production.
The centuries-old wine tradition, crossed by a tireless pursuit of quality, has led the cellar of the monastery of Eberbach to become one of the largest and most prestigious estates in Germany . The vineyards are mostly grown in Riesling, the main grape of the region , but Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Dornfelder are also produced. The Steinberg vineyard, planted by the monks over 700 years ago , still produces some of the best wines on the estate today.
