Description
What kind of wine it is
Barolo Riserva Monfortino by Giacomo Conterno is a still red wine from Nebbiolo grapes from the Francia cru in Serralunga d’Alba, Piedmont. Its style boasts a solid structure, elegance, and an aptitude for evolution. The winemaking follows a traditional approach with fermentation in wood and long maceration, followed by extended aging in large barrels. This process defines a complex profile, precise in aromas and focused on harmony.
Where it comes from
Barolo Riserva Monfortino is born in Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, within the Francia cru. The vineyards are situated between 350 and 450 meters, with west and southwest exposures ensuring consistent light and ventilation. Soils rich in marl provide a precise tannic structure and good depth. The continental climate with warm summers and cool nights encourages slow ripening and clear aromas, with a well-perceived freshness.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous selection of Nebbiolo grapes, limited to suitable vintages. After destemming, fermentation takes place in oak vats with long skin maceration to gradually extract tannins and aromas. Aging continues for many years in large Austrian oak casks, followed by a period in bottle to harmonize the profile. This traditional method integrates structure and aromas without excessive wood influence and ensures balance and longevity.
Tasting notes
In the glass it appears garnet red, with the typical transparency of Nebbiolo and brick hues that develop with time. On the nose it reveals violet, dried rose petals, small red fruits, notes of helichrysum, balsamic nuances, and delicate spices. On the palate it is deep and complex, supported by lively freshness and a dense yet refined tannic structure. The finish is long, with floral and spicy returns and a dry close.
Pairings
Thanks to its structure and intensity, Barolo Riserva Monfortino pairs well with protein-rich dishes and slow-cooked recipes. Excellent with beef braised in Barolo and stewed game such as wild boar or hare, it also goes well with agnolotti del plin in roast sauce and tajarin with ragù. Aged hard cheeses enhance the aromatic components and the balance between freshness and maturity. Perfect for the most traditional Piedmontese cuisine.
When to serve it
This wine is ideal for important occasions and elaborate tables, when complexity and aging potential are sought. Serve in large glasses at about 18 °C, after proper aeration or decanting if needed. Thanks to long cask aging and the balance between acidity and tannin, it keeps well in the cellar and evolves positively. The best time to drink it spans from perfect harmony to advanced maturity, maintaining personality and depth over time.
