Description
What kind of wine is it?
Beaune 1er Cru Les Sizies from Domaine de Montille is a red wine made from Pinot Noir in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. This Premier Cru displays a fruit-driven style, with a fine texture and an easy-drinking character even in its early years. Vinification takes place in large wooden casks, with some whole clusters used to maintain a fresh, precise profile, while aging in mostly used barrels ensures a balance between elegance and the wine’s potential for evolution.
Where it comes from
It originates in the Beaune appellation, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, from the Les Sizies climat classified as Premier Cru. The 1.62-hectare parcel sits at the base of the slope, on clay-rich soils that retain moisture and favor steady ripening. The continental climate with wide temperature swings supports high acidity and aromatic definition, while the valley bottom position adds fleshiness and immediacy, balanced by the fine tannins characteristic of local Pinot Noir.
How it is produced
The grapes are brought to the cellar and undergo maceration and fermentation in large wooden vats, with gentle extraction to promote finesse and juiciness. About a third of the grapes are left as whole clusters, a choice that increases aromatic complexity and adds to the tannin structure without weighing down the profile. The wine is aged in barrels with a small proportion of new oak to round out the texture and add subtle spice without overpowering the fruit.
Tasting notes
Bright ruby red color with lively highlights. On the nose, aromas of small red berries such as cherry and raspberry emerge, alongside floral notes and nuanced hints of spice and undergrowth from the skilfully judged use of oak and whole clusters. On the palate, it is soft yet vibrant, with present acidity, a fruity core, and silky tannins supporting a clean, harmonious and persistent finish.
Food pairings
Pairs easily with roast poultry thanks to its measured structure and freshness that cleanses the palate. It enhances artisanal cured meats without masking their spiciness and suits white meats in sauce, mushrooms, and veal-based dishes. A classic local pairing is coq au vin bourguignon, which harmonizes with the juicy fruit and refined mouthfeel.
When to serve
Ideal for lunch or dinner when you want an elegant and smooth red that complements food without overwhelming. Serve at around 15–16 °C in a large glass. A short decanting enhances the spicy and fruity notes. Enjoyable from youth, it will also evolve gracefully, maintaining freshness, texture and complexity for several years in the cellar.
