Description
What kind of wine it is
The Brunello di Montalcino by Banfi is a red from Sangiovese grapes, intense, elegant, and balanced. Its character combines supple, polished tannins with bright acidity, lending it a lively, powerful structure. It stands out for excellent persistence and great aging potential. It is a classic of Banfi's production in Montalcino.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the estate's hillside vineyards in Montalcino, with gentle to moderate slopes. The soils are formed on different sediments: from deep, calcareous, stone-rich clayey marine Pliocene sands to grey-blue clays, moderately deep, mineral, and moisture-retentive. This diversity of soils contributes to the wine's complexity and structure. Banfi has produced its Brunello since the inaugural 1978 vintage.
How it's made
Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in combined stainless-steel and French-oak Horizon tanks, a solution that enhances aromatic precision. This is followed by at least two years of maturation, 80% in French oak casks and 20% in French oak barriques. This dual passage in wood polishes the tannins and supports the wine's evolution in bottle.
Tasting notes
In appearance it is ruby red with slight garnet highlights. The nose offers a sweet, fruity bouquet with hints of plum, ripe cherry and red berries, perfectly balanced with notes of licorice and pipe tobacco. On the palate, the supple, polished tannins integrate with bright acidity, giving a lively, powerful structure and a finish of excellent persistence.
Food pairings
It pairs particularly well with rich, flavorful dishes. Its structure and acidity make it suitable for grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses. It is also ideal as a wine for contemplation.
When to serve it
This is a red for occasions when you seek an intense, elegant profile, to be enjoyed after a meal or during dedicated tastings. It has great aging potential and is well suited to cellaring, where it continues to evolve over time.
