Description
What kind of wine is it
Grans Muralles by Torres is a red wine produced in Catalonia, in the Conca de Barberà area. It is made from a blend of Garró, Querol, Garnacha, Cariñena, and Monastrell, varieties that offer a rich and precise profile. Fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperature and prolonged maceration on the skins allow for gentle extraction. Aging in French oak barriques adds structure, spice, and a clear mineral tension while maintaining the purity of the local grapes.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Conca de Barberà, in inland Catalonia, an area characterized by temperature variations and altitude that influence ripening. The vineyards are located between 445 and 470 meters above sea level, on poor and well-draining soils rich in schist and granitic gravels. These conditions favor slow ripening and stable acidity, elements that support the wine's regional identity. The name recalls the ancient walls of the Poblet monastery, a symbol of local agricultural history.
How it is made
Harvesting is carefully managed to preserve the native varieties and their typicity. Vinification takes place in small stainless steel vats, with controlled fermentation to manage aromas and tannic texture. This is followed by a long maceration on the skins for a complete but delicate extraction. Maturation continues for about 18 months in fine-grained, mostly new French oak barriques, promoting stability and complexity.
Tasting notes
Visually, the wine shows an intense red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers aromas of forest berries, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, and a mineral note reminiscent of stone. On the palate, it is powerful yet balanced, with smooth tannins, a well-present acidity, and a solid structure. The finish is long, with spicy and mineral returns, and shows a good capacity for evolution.
Food pairings
Grans Muralles pairs well with braised meats, game, and hearty dishes from the Catalan tradition, where the wine's structure enhances succulence and aromatic intensity. It is recommended with braised dishes, stews, hare civet, Catalan-style wild boar stew, roast lamb, and aged hard cheeses. The balance between fruit and wood lends versatility to flavorful and spicy dishes.
When to serve it
Ideal for a structured dinner or friendly gatherings during the cooler months, Grans Muralles should be served at a cool serving temperature suitable for structured red wines in large glasses. A brief decanting helps open up the aromas and soften the tannins. It can be enjoyed immediately for its precision and also offers good cellaring potential, developing greater spicy and balsamic complexity over time.
