Description
What kind of wine is it
Le Mortelle’s Maremma Toscana Poggio alle Nane is a structured red wine, the result of meticulous work in the vineyard and in the cellar. Made from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, it conveys the authentic character of Maremma Toscana through a full, well-defined profile. Careful grape selection and winemaking deliver an enveloping palate, characterized by polished tannins and a lingering finish, clearly speaking of its sense of place.
Where it comes from
This wine comes from the Le Mortelle estate, an Antinori property located a few kilometers from the coast of Castiglione della Pescaia. The winegrowing area of Maremma Toscana is strongly influenced by its proximity to the sea, which lends a distinctly Mediterranean stamp to the agricultural landscape. In this coastal microclimate, Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère find an ideal environment to ripen. The result is a modern, site-driven interpretation in which the maritime setting helps shape the grapes’ intensity and aromatic precision.
How it is made
Vinification begins with a gentle crush of carefully selected grapes, followed by gravity transfer into stainless steel tanks. Fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28 °C is accompanied by a twenty-day maceration on the skins to extract color and tannic structure. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques, an essential step to integrate the acid component. Finally, the process is completed by sixteen months’ maturation in French oak barrels, which imparts depth and structural cohesion.
Tasting notes
Visually, the wine shows a deep, almost opaque ruby red color. The bouquet delivers an intense, complex impression, marked by clear notes of blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, elegantly layered with hints of licorice and eucalyptus. On the palate, it is decidedly structured and enveloping, led by polished tannins that carry the taste with no harsh edges. The tasting concludes with a persistent finish, a direct testament to the extended skin contact and measured time in wood.
What to pair it with
The elegant tannin weave and good aromatic concentration make this red ideal with lamb and succulent roasts. The wine’s breadth pairs beautifully with all dishes based on furred game, able to balance the dark fruit and spicy streaks in the glass. In regional cuisine, it marries superbly with Maremman-style wild boar, a classic dish that highlights the wine’s balsamic character. More generally, it’s a perfect ally for flavorful meat preparations that call for a wine with substance. Ideal for an autumn or winter dinner, or a Sunday lunch with rich, convivial flavors.
When to serve it
This wine is the right choice for important lunches and dinners, when the table calls for an intense aromatic profile and an enveloping presence on the palate. Thanks to its extended maturation in French oak, it has what it takes to evolve further if left to rest in the cellar. Perfect for convivial moments and special occasions with family or friends.
