Description
What kind of wine is it
Nizza by Francesco Iandolo is a red wine made from Barbera grapes grown on the hills of Monferrato. It displays a structured and complex style thanks to aging in large oak barrels. The flavor profile is full and savory, with a balance between freshness and well-integrated tannins. Its persistence and potential for evolution over time make Nizza suitable both for immediate drinking and for moderate aging.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the crus of Burio and Stella, in the municipalities of Moasca and Vaglio Serra, in the province of Asti. The vineyards are located at around 200 meters above sea level.
How it is produced
Harvesting is done by hand in the second half of September, selecting only the best bunches. After a gentle destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature for 15-20 days, with daily punch-downs and pump-overs to extract color and tannin. The wine then matures in large oak barrels for about a year, developing aromatic complexity, and rests in stainless steel tanks for another six months to preserve freshness and purity.
Tasting notes
On sight, Nizza displays an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose reveals aromas of fresh red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, along with floral hints of wilted rose and herbal notes of sage. The palate is full and enveloping, with soft yet noticeable tannins, good acidity that gives drive, and a lingering finish with fruity echoes, light spicy nuances, and a savory ending.
Food pairings
Nizza by Francesco Iandolo pairs well with first courses featuring meat sauces, such as tagliatelle with braised meat ragù, as well as grilled meats. For a regional match, it is perfect with agnolotti del plin or brasato al Barolo, dishes that enhance the structure of Barbera. On a national level, it complements ossobuco alla milanese, where the wine's persistence integrates with intense flavors. The balance between structure and acidity makes it ideal for rich and flavorful dishes.
When to serve it
Nizza is ready after a few years of bottle aging and retains a fruity profile even when young. It is recommended to enjoy it after moderate aging to appreciate the evolution of its secondary notes. For optimal tasting, serve at a cool room temperature and open the bottle shortly before serving.
