Description
What kind of wine it is
Gelso Nero by Podere 29 is a red wine from Apulia made from Nero di Troia grapes. Vinification takes place entirely in stainless steel, with fermentation and ageing that preserve the varietal profile and the freshness of the fruit. The result is a full-bodied yet smooth style, with well-present tannins and good freshness, suitable for immediate consumption but also able to evolve over a few years. This production approach enhances the typical characteristics of the grape variety and its versatility at the table.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from vineyards in Apulia, in an area particularly suited to Nero di Troia. The sandy-loam soils encourage drainage and regular ripening, resulting in more balanced tannins and a sense of freshness. The Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and good ventilation, along with the temperature swings between day and night, highlights the aromatic definition and fruit richness. The wine thus reflects the authentic character of the territory.
How it is made
Harvesting of the Nero di Troia grapes is followed by meticulous destemming and alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. Skin maceration extracts colour and phenolic compounds, while about six months’ aging in steel preserves aromatic purity and fruit freshness. The absence of barrel aging limits oxidative input, so the wine remains precise and easy to drink. Stabilisation and bottling are carefully managed to ensure integrity and cleanliness.
Tasting notes
Visually, Gelso Nero displays an intense ruby color with violet highlights, a sign of youth and good extraction. The nose offers a broad bouquet with notes of ripe red fruits, fig, black pepper, and cloves, with a spicy component typical of the variety. On the palate, it is rich and enveloping, with solid structure, well-integrated tannins, and freshness sustaining the progression. The finish is persistent, harmonious, and centered around fruit and spice.
Food pairings
Gelso Nero pairs well with grilled red meats, roasts, and aged cheeses, thanks to its structure and tannins balancing rich and flavorful dishes. In Apulian cuisine, it accompanies bombette from the Itria Valley or grilled lamb, while in Italian tradition it goes with sliced beef steak and aged pecorino. Braciole in tomato sauce find balance with the spiciness of Nero di Troia, making this wine versatile at the table.
When to serve it
This wine is ideal for those seeking a structured yet clean red wine, perfect for Sunday lunches, meat-based dinners, and convivial moments. Serve at 16–18 °C, with a brief decanting if necessary to soften the tannins and enhance the aromatic profile. Ageing in steel supports freshness over time, so the wine can evolve for several years, developing more complex and spiced notes.
